How to find a job in the GCC: a step-by-step guide for Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and beyond

6 min read

The Gulf job market moves fast: good roles attract hundreds of applications within days of being posted. Finding a job is less about sending as many applications as possible and more about searching in the right places, applying early and tailoring each application. Here is a practical plan.

1. Decide exactly what you are looking for

Pick one or two target job titles, your preferred countries and cities, and your minimum requirements. "Accountant or Financial Analyst in Riyadh or Dubai" gets far better results than "any finance job in the Gulf". A clear target also makes it easier to tailor your CV and set up useful job alerts.

2. Search where Gulf employers actually post

  • LinkedIn — widely used by employers and recruiters across the GCC, especially for professional and management roles.
  • Regional job boards such as Bayt, GulfTalent and NaukriGulf, which focus on Middle East hiring.
  • Indeed and other international boards, which also carry many GCC listings.
  • Company career pages — large employers often post roles on their own sites first.
  • Recruitment agencies that specialise in your industry.

3. Apply early with job alerts

Recruiters often start shortlisting from the first applications they receive. Set up alerts for your target titles and locations so you see new roles quickly and can apply within a day or two.

Checking several job boards every day is time-consuming. TalentScan’s GCC job alerts watch multiple boards for your chosen roles and countries and notify you when matching jobs appear.

4. Tailor your CV for every application

Adjust your professional summary and skills to reflect the words used in each posting, and move your most relevant experience to the top. Make sure your CV is readable by applicant tracking systems — see our guide to writing an ATS-friendly CV.

5. Make your LinkedIn profile work for you

  • Use a clear headline with your target title, for example "Senior Accountant | IFRS | Riyadh".
  • Set your location to the city where you want to work, if you are there or ready to relocate.
  • Turn on "Open to work" for recruiters and list your target job titles.
  • Add skills that match the roles you want; recruiters search by them.

6. Understand local requirements

Each GCC country has its own work visa, residency and localisation rules — for example Saudization (Nitaqat) in Saudi Arabia and Emiratisation in the UAE — which affect which roles are open to which candidates. Read postings carefully for nationality, visa or language requirements, and check official government sources for the current rules before you relocate.

7. Prepare before the interview call comes

Many first interviews in the region are short phone or video calls. Prepare a two-minute summary of your experience, your reason for wanting the role, your notice period and your salary expectations in the local currency. Practising your answers out loud makes a noticeable difference.

Avoid job scams

  • Real employers do not ask you to pay for a job offer, visa or interview.
  • Be careful with offers that arrive without any interview.
  • Check that the company and email domain are genuine before sharing passport or ID copies.
